Rabbi Avi Libman joined Beth El in 2004. Having been a student at the Ziegler Rabbinical School at the University of Judaism, the future Rabbi Libman gives full credit to his learning period for inspiration to enter the area of synagogue leadership as Associate Rabbi to Senior Rabbi, Philip Graubart and to give the congregants the benefits of such knowledge. Interning at Congregation Ner Tamid in Palos Verdes and serving in the U.S. Navy Chaplaincy Corps has enhanced his rabbinical career. 

Hannah Tropeczer
Kindergarten teacher

This is Hannah's second year at Beth El teaching Kindergarten. She graduated from UCSD with a major in clinical psychology and minor in human development. In addition to Hannah's psychology classes, her main areas of focus included childhood development and early childhood education studies. In the future, She wants to attend graduate school to become a family therapist. Hannah is very excited for this school year and can't wait to introduce her students to Hebrew school and Jewish life, culture, and religion.

Chelsea Rapoport
2nd Grade teacher

This is Chelsea's first year at Beth El teaching 2nd grade. Chelsea is currently a PhD student at the SDSU/UCSD Joint Doctoral Program in Clinical Psychology. Her research interests are in supporting chronically ill pediatric and adolescent/young adult patients. She previously taught 2nd grade and advanced Hebrew at a synagogue in Boston, MA, and is excited to continue teaching in San Diego. Chelsea looks forward to helping her students learn about the richness of Jewish studies and culture! 

Katie Oberman
4th Grade teacher

Katie Oberman was born and raised in Carlsbad, California, where she grew up surrounded by the Temple Solel and Beth Am Jewish communities. Katie went to Temple Solel's Camp Simcha as a camper for many years, and she loved working on staff there ever since. Katie is a student at UC San Diego where she studies Education so she may become an elementary school teacher. This will be her 6th year here at VTS, and she absolutely loves teaching kids and watching them grow!

Eva Eiseman
6th Grade teacher

Eva Illyes-Eiseman and her husband moved out to San Diego from the east coast, 16 years ago this past August. She has ten years of experience teaching in religious schools in South Orange, New Jersey, New York City, Los Angeles, and West Hartford, Connecticut. This will be her seventh year at Beth El. Eva truly loves the spark that kids have --She is a mom of five children - her oldest two are teens and the youngest is six and a half! Eva loves teaching children about our rich culture, religion and our amazing Jewish heritage!  She feels privileged to get the chance to teach what Eva practices in her own life. Eva hopes that comes across when she teaches! Eva is looking forward to a wonderful year and can't wait to meet her students and their families.

Heidi Handelsman
7th & 8th Grade teacher

Heidi Handelsman is a theater artist, storyteller, and educator. Originally from New York, Heidi has spent time in 35 states and six countries -- so far. Heidi's favorite figures from the Tanakh include Eve, Jonah, and Esther. When she isn't digging into Jewish texts and history, she can be found hiking, cooking, and building sand castles at the beach for her son to knock down. BA: Vassar College, MFA: Brown University. 

Hannah Anbar
Hebrew Specialist 

 

Hannah's family moved to La Jolla from Syracuse, NY, and they love it here. They have 4 semi-grown children, only some of whom moved with her. Hannah is a full-time mom and has a Ph.D. in Educational Psychology. She has taught in colleges, Hebrew Schools, and she is a ceramist, a jeweler and an amateur flower photographer.  Currently, in addition to being mom, Hannah is teaching tutoring at VTS in Hebrew and also Bar/Bat Mitzvah students. She often read Torah or Haftorah at CBE on Saturday mornings, and sometimes you can find her at the cash register in the CBE Women’s Connection Shop.  

Chloe Rosenbaum
Hebrew Specialist 

Chloe Rosenbaum grew up in Redondo Beach, CA, and attended Congregation Tikvat Jacob where she fostered her love for reading Hebrew and chanting from the Torah. Chloe loves tutoring, and has been a B’nai Mitzvah tutor for the last 6 years. Chloe is currently a student at UCSD and she enjoys reading, photography, traveling, crocheting, and playing tennis.

Hillel “Hilly” Rubin is new to the Beth El community. He was born and raised in Carlsbad and graduated from Carlsbad HS in 2013. He grew up the Cantor’s (Kathy Robbins) son at Temple Solel. He was active in youth groups and summer camps, where he learned to songlead under Craig Parks from the age of 14. He has been serving the San Diego Jewish community as a song leader and cantorial soloist, camp counselor, youth advisor, tutor, and teacher for nearly 13 years. He has served the communities of Temple Etz Rimon, Temple Solel/Camp Simcha, Congregation Beth Israel, and continues to serve Temple Emanu-El, and Congregation Dor Hadash in addition to joining our team at Beth El. He served Camp Ramah Wisconsin in 2015 as a live-in counselor/Songleader and the SF Bay Area community as the seasonal, full-time Head Songleader at Camp Tawonga in 2017 and has returned yearly as a song/service leader for family camps and High Holy Day services. He attended Mira Costa College from 2014-2017 and transferred to San Diego State University and received a 3-year Army ROTC scholarship. In May 2020, Hilly graduated Cum Laude from SDSU with a BA in International Security and Conflict Resolution, and Spanish and simultaneously commissioned into the California Army National Guard as a Military Police Officer. In May of 2021 he graduated from the US Army Military Police Basic Officer Leadership Course, receiving Commandant’s List honors (top 20% of the class). Hilly will continue serving in the Army National Guard until at least May of 2028. As a civilian, Hilly has been working as a Technical Recruiter since June of 2021 at TEKsystems, the largest Technology Talent Services and Services company in North America, from the La Jolla-based office. He met his soul-mate/perfect match, Morganne Sigismonti at Rosh HaShanah family services (which he was leading) in 2018. Morganne is a second-year master’s student at the Bren School at UC Santa Barbara, and will graduate in June of 2022 with her MS of Environmental Science and Corporate Management. They were married in December of 2020 and have one, beautiful and crazy feline-child together named Sprout aka “Kitty”. Together they enjoy traveling to and exploring National Parks, eating Thai and Himalayan food, running, practicing yoga, and hiking.
