The Simchat Torah Flag, a Reminder of Jewish Messianism

Saturday, October 26, 2024 24 Tishrei 5785

11:30 AM - 1:00 PMJFCH

Join us after Shabbat Services for a Shabbat luncheon and presentation by Dr. Bard Cosman who will be discussing: The Simchat Torah Flag, a Reminder of Jewish Messianism.

We speak of flags in our liturgy every day, but we wave one only on Simchat Torah. This flag is ephemeral like no other ceremonial object.
Try this thought experiment: imagine an heirloom-quality Simchat Torah flag for sale at a Judaica shop. Why do you instinctively know that's ridiculous?
Using some history and some social-science theory, I offer a novel explanation for the unique position of this semi-taboo object in our tradition.
This talk won the Capt. William Driver Award at the 2024 North American Vexillological Association meeting in St. Paul.

Bard Cosman is a Professor of Clinical Surgery at UC San Diego, based at the VA Medical Center. Husband of Pam and father of Benjamin, Rafael, Gilead, and Ilan. His interest in Jewish flags  started with a Beth El sermon on Parashat Chukat in 2018, and he has been poking into this topic ever since.
