Jews in the Media - Hollywood, Headlines & Jewish Identity
Thursday, January 22
5:00 PM | Torah Scroll Dedication
5:45 PM | Communal Dinner at BEIT Café
6:30 PM | Jews in the Media with Rabbi Ron Shulman, Rabbi Avi Libman, and Jared Aarons
7:30 PM | Being a Jew in Hollywood and How The Simpson's predict the future with David Sacks

Our evening of learning begins at 5:00 PM as we dedicate a new Torah Scroll donated to Congregation Beth El by Hannah and Ran Anbar. Join us to witness the final letters of this scroll being written by the sofer, Torah scribe and synagogue friends.

After dinner, Rabbi Shulman and Rabbi Avi, will examine how Judaism and Jewish family life are portrayed in television and film. Together, they will share and discuss selected clips that highlight Jewish characters and moments on screen, inviting us to consider whether these representations are fair, accurate, or reflective of real Jewish experience.

Jared Aarons, Beth El Board member, Emmy award-winning journalist and longtime anchor/reporter for ABC 10News San Diego, will join the rabbis to offer an inside look at what it means to be a Jewish journalist today. He will reflect on navigating Jewish identity in the newsroom, Jewish representation in the news, and share stories from his work covering Jewish issues and communities.

The evening culminates with our featured guest, David Sacks, Emmy and Golden Globe Award–winning writer and producer of TV’s The Simpsons. Raised in New York City, David Sacks speaks to enthusiastic crowds, opening the hearts of people across the US, Europe, Israel, South Africa, and colleges across America. David reflects on life’s meaning as he discusses Hollywood’s impact on the world with stories that are laugh out loud funny. He brings us an insider's look into what it was like being an observant Jew in one of Hollywood's most legendary writing rooms.

Expect an evening filled with insight, laughter, and meaningful conversation, celebrating the many ways Jewish stories show up in the world around us.
